If you’ve been around St. Margaret’s in the past year, you’ve likely seen Nic Eberly, whose smile and easygoing nature make him a great fit for the welcoming spirit of our congregation..

Nic has deep Baton Rouge roots—he grew up in the Shenandoah area and for about five years has called the Mid City area home, where he enjoys the company of an impressive collection of stuffed animals and Gundam model kits.

During the week, Nic helps shape young minds as a tenth-grade Civics teacher (in his fourth year), helping his students make sense of government and their place in the world.

Outside the classroom, he’s a passionate music fan and an expert on singer-songwriter, composer, author, activist and gay icon Tori Amos. Nic has traveled extensively across the U.S. and Europe to see her in concert—19 times and counting! He also loves spending time with friends, discovering new coffee shops and restaurants, and exploring local parks and trails.

Nic’s spiritual journey has been one of growth, reflection, and rediscovery. Raised Catholic, he began to distance himself from the church after coming out as gay as a teenager, turning instead toward agnosticism and exploring different spiritual paths.

Over time, his heart was drawn back toward Christianity, and he found at St. Margaret’s a place where his faith could flourish. “Saint Margaret's has transformed my faith into something I can share with a community of friends,” he says. “It’s a place that’s welcoming, friendly, and accepting.”

What stands out to Nic about St. Margaret’s is the variety of ministries and opportunities for connection: “There is something for everyone, and there’s always something going on to look forward to.” He even has an idea for another way to bring people together—a walking group to enjoy Baton Rouge area parks and nature trails.

When asked how he’d like to be remembered someday, Nic’s answer reflects the heart he brings to our church community: hoping people will remember him as “a fun, friendly, easy-going person who brought light and joy to those around him.” He seems to be well on his way to doing just that.

Get to know Nic. Strike up a conversation. You may share a laugh, swap music recommendations, or just enjoy connecting—because, above all, Nic wants to bring joy and light to those around him.
