As the Season of Creation comes to a close, we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4. Known as the patron saint of ecology, St. Francis honored the interconnectedness of all creation and showed deep care for nature, animals, and those in need.
Ways to Celebrate St. Francis Day (October 4):
Care for Creation and Animals
- Support Local Shelters: Donate pet food, gently used blankets, or towels to our local animal shelter, or volunteer your time.
- Attend a Pet Blessing: Bring your pets to a local church or community gathering for a traditional Blessing of the Animals.
- Spend Time Outdoors: Go for a nature hike, clean up litter in your neighborhood, or put out birdseed for migrating wildlife.
- Garden Sustainably: Plant native flowers in your yard or community green space to support local pollinators.
Serve the Poor and Promote Peace
- Volunteer Locally: Donate time at a local soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or food pantry.
- Practice Generosity: Donate gently used clothing, household goods, or toys to charity.
- Pray for Peace: Reflect on the Prayer of St. Francis ("Lord, make me an instrument of your peace") to center your mind on humility and reconciliation.
Additionally, thank you to everyone who has contributed recyclable materials for our Children's Creation Care Sunday School to reuse and repurpose. This Sunday, October 4, marks the final day of our collection at St. Margaret's.
